Get Involved!

Volunteering is a great way to have fun and make a difference in the massage profession. You can use your skills, talents and passions and learn new skills while working with others in a common goal.

See our Current volunteer opportunities.

The best way to get involved is to become a member (link opens in new window to AMTA National Website)! Membership in the American Massage Therapy Association includes liability insurance, CE classes (online and in person national and state convention), networking and advocacy for the massage profession in the State of WA and Nationally. Our State Lobbyist watches over the Board of Massage and Legislation activities in WA State. Our Government Relations Committe works closely with the Lobbyist and also is involved in working with health insurance carriers.

Our AMTA-WA Volunteers are what make the difference!

AMTA-WA is almost exclusively driven by the efforts of volunteers. All of the events, projects, programs and support that is provided by AMTA-WA represents thousands of hours per year in volunteerism from our community.

Our board of directors are volunteers. Our Government Affairs & External Relations program are volunteers. Our Community Service Massage Team are all volunteers. Volunteers contribute to the e-newsletter that goes to members and manage social media to get information to members. Volunteers help organize the annual meeting and the state massage convention. Get the picture?

In return, we support our volunteers and provide leadership development trainings to help volunteers grow and learn. The skills and abilities can easily translate into your business/career and help you to be more successful in whatever you do!

If you are not currently volunteering with us, we invite you to become an essential part of our very important mission. No matter your time constraints, no matter your location, we have a position for you. Contact our Volunteer Development Coordinator, Allison Hanelt.

Government Relations:

AMTA-WA has an active Government Relations (GR) committee and lobbyists, committed to
serving the massage therapy profession on behalf of all massage therapists in Washington. The
primary role of the GR committee is to work with the lobbyist to identify, monitor, support, testify
and even propose bills during the legislative session.

In addition, the committee identifies gaps or issues in laws, rules, policies, and relationships and works to improve massage therapists’ practices. Thirdly, the committee organizes Massage Legislative Days, and other events to connect massage therapists with key players in the legislative, insurance, and industry leaders to network and discuss important issues.

Open Position: The GR committee is currently (as of 11/09/22) seeking new committee members. Diana L Thompson, chair, is building a new committee and helping hire a new lobbyist. Now is the time to step up and make a difference for the profession. We’d like the new team together and oriented for the legislative session beginning January 10th. and you may choose to just participate during legislative sessions and remain on call the rest of the year if that works better for your schedule.

Key requirements:

  • Interest in the government process
  • Experience in any one of the following: leadership, social networking, political networking,
  • organizing events, education, research literacy
  • Skills working with others within a group process
  • Ability to share thoughts and positions, consider others, and work toward consensus
